And it's up!

I've just looked back to see when I planted the garlic in the tubs and pots in the greenhouse and it was 14 October. So why the sudden urge to check?

Well - I don't go into the greenhouse every day now so the last time that I checked on the garlic was 30 October and some cloves had just begun to sprout and were looking like this.
But today there are lots of shoots and some are quite tall.
I don't expect the garlic growing on the plot is so far advanced but I do hope this isn't sending up shoots too soon!

  1. I think it will be just fine. I planted a lot of my garlic outside one week earlier then you did. One variety is taller then yours is. My garlic usually grows quite a bit before the cold days of winter. I have yet to loose one single plant! I do mulch it with several inches of straw before the winter though.

  2. It's a bit odd to see things putting on so much growth at this time of year. We're usually freezing stood around the bonfire, we're not usually having such mild weather.

  3. Hopefully we'll soon get the cold weather that garlic needs. It sounds really odd to be wishing for cold weather, but this warm autumn is disconcerting.

  4. I wish I could say the same about not losing garlic, Robin. I hope it grows better than last year.

No doubt it will hit us hard when it does come, Jo.

    It's been a very strange 2011, Linda

  6. We have some garlic lost this year. Hopefully the rest will be ready to harvest in another 2 months. Hope yours will grow well through winter and produce big bulbs later.

  7. I think the garlic will be fine - I thought i'd planted mine too soon last year and it was absolutely fine (and our autumns are considerably warmer than yours). My garlic has a couple of months growing left but the stalks are loking really fat so I'm very very hopefull

  9. I've looked back on my earlier photos, Mark and last December there was no sign of sprouting and in 2009 the garlic looked something like this in February!

If just a few produce bulbs I'll be happy, Diana.

Yes I suppose it will soon turn cold for us Liz, I've added you to my blog list so I can get a garden fix during our no grow season.

Best get those cloves in Damo! Although apparently some varieties are OK for planting much later even in spring.

  13. Pop your garlic in pots if it comes a bit late Tanya, just to start it off. I'd email the seed people a hurry up if I were you!
