New shoots

Last year a friend bought us a potted hydrangea as a summerhouse warming present.

The plant has spent winter in the garden greenhouse and is now beginning to produce new green shoots. This was a signal for me to cut off the dead 'flower' heads which had been left on to give a little frost protection. It's still in the greenhouse so hopefully now the shoots will survive.
I wonder whether it will flower again for us this year. Anyone grown a hydrangea in a pot and had it flower again successfully?

  1. Hi Sue,

We have had a hydrangea in a pot flower year after year. We leave it out all year, but it is in a very sheltered garden nestled under a bamboo hedge. It grows rather lankily, but it does flower!

  2. My potted Hydrangeas flowered year after year even though I left them outside all year round in the same position. I disposed of them a couple of days ago though because they just looked dead to me this year. I'm now wishing I hadn't been so hasty and think tomorrow I will go and fish them back out from where I threw them and encourage some life back into them.
I have another potted one in the polytunnel that would have suffered the same fate if I hadn't noticed some tiny buds breaking through.
Yours are going great guns though and will look spectacular when in flower again.

    1. Did you try the scratch test Linda to see if there was green beneath the surface of the twigs, Linda?

  3. They do great in pots and left outside as long as they are not in too cold a position. The top soil is best scraped away and top dressed each year and I usually put some slow release fertiliser in

    1. We maybe wouldn't have bought one ourselves but it was lovely last year, Jo. It may end up planted in the ground.

  5. Hiya Sue, I have a new hydrangea in a pot but I fear the worst for it at the minute. I need to get it back into my greenhouse asap. The weather is bad here at the minute. Thanks for the reminder! Glad to know that they do ok in pots though.

  6. My mother hydrangea bloom for the first time this year. But the bloom is small which I think because of lack of sun.
